Serene Centre Through the Serene Centre program, the Stirling Women’s Centre is offering free workshops for women and children who have experienced family and domestic violence. Held at Stirling Community Centres – Nollamara, the workshops cover a range of topics that promote healthy relationships, empowerment and self-care. constellation known as the Southern Cross, the word ‘Mirrabooka’ became the title for the popular suburb in the early 1980s. Before that, the area was known as Yirrigan. Going back further, the origins of the suburb started in 1968 after a Shire of Perth ward boundary reshuffle created the Balga Ward to cover Nollamara, Balga and Yirrigan. In 1982, Yirrigan was given the new name of Mirrabooka and since then the suburb has gone from strength to strength. It is now home to a thriving multicultural community, Stirling Leisure Centres – Herb Graham Recreation Centre, several schools, The Square Mirrabooka and Stirling Libraries – Mirrabooka, which opened in 1986. Blink Photography Awards Impressive and fascinating are just a couple of ways to describe the entries in the City’s recent Blink Photography Awards. Held every two years, the awards celebrate the art of photography across four categories: Colour, Monochrome, Altered and Mobile. The City received more than 330 submissions from amateur and professional photographers. Judges awarded the Best Photograph to Emma Thorp for ‘ Pink ’ and Luke Antenucci won the Youth Award for ‘ Dad Jokes ’. The People’s Choice Award went to Nurin Syaza Sarbini for the ‘ Honesty’ entry. The City of Stirling would like to thank all entrants and everyone who visited the exhibition. Get in the swim The Leisurepark Masters Swimming Club has put the call out for new members over 18 years of age to join the group for regular swimming. The club promotes friendship, fun and fitness through swimming and social activities. Members meet at Stirling Leisure Centres – Leisurepark Balga on Tuesdays from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The club provides a variety of skill development, training and competition opportunities in the pool and open water. Email leisureparkmasters@gmail.com to contact the club. Waste collection update Waste bins scheduled for collection on Good Friday 19 April 2019 will be emptied on Saturday 20 April 2019. Collections will continue as per normal from Easter Monday. Green waste (bulk verge collection), on demand or skip bin collections will not go ahead over the Easter weekend. These services will resume on Tuesday 23 April 2019. The City’s Recycling Centre Balcatta will be closed on Good Friday 19 April 2019. Waste bins will be emptied as normal on ANZAC Day 25 April 2019.

Purple benches The City now has purple benches at two local parks to commemorate victims of domestic and family violence and to highlight the City’s commitment to this issue. The benches at Stirling Civic Gardens and Des Penman Reserve, Nollamara were installed as part of a campaign run by the Women’s Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services. The benches also feature help contact numbers for people experiencing domestic and family violence. If you are experiencing family or domestic violence, the Stirling Women’s Centre can support you. The centre provides crisis accommodation and support services for women and children. Phone (08) 9205 7375 for more information.
