A classic look at Wanneroo Road near Dog Swamp

Yokine Derived from the Aboriginal word for native dog, Yokine got its name because of its closeness to Dog Swamp. First named Mount Yokine in 1922, the area was originally used as a survey point and sits close to 80 metres above sea level. The suburb was also known as Yokine Hill at one time. Prior to World War II, there was just the one house in the area at the eastern end of Royal Street. A housing boom after the war resulted in most of the land around the local golf course being developed by the early 1950s. The suburb was later recognised as a postal district name in 1954. The southern section of Yokine experienced rapid housing growth in the 1960s and the suburb was almost completely developed by the late 1970s.Yokine is home to the Western Australian Golf Club, Dog Swamp Shopping Centre and Yokine Regional Open Space. To discover more about the City’s history, visit the museum on Elvire Street on Wednesdays from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, other times by appointment.

Damien won the coveted Acquisitive Award and $5,000 in prize money for his drawing/mixed media work Primary , which wowed the judges. Damien described winning the award as “a life-changer” after years of being on medication for a heart condition. Now free of medication, Damien’s new outlook prompted a move from drawing only in greyscale to using primary colours.
