Like me, I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the warmer weather and there’s plenty to keep you entertained in and around the City this summer. We have a bunch of markets happening across the City from Scarborough to Inglewood, so there’s no better time to enjoy the outdoors and try something new. A list of several local markets features on Page 4 of this issue. Just finally, on behalf of all Councillors, I would like to wish all City of Stirling residents a safe and happy Christmas and a great NewYear.

What could be better than enjoying the magnificent Sunset Veranda pop-up venue while you take in a beautiful beach sunset with family and friends? Well, you can do just that from mid-January when Sunset Veranda returns to Scarborough Beach.

Our City To give you an insight into the progress on some of the City’s projects, here is a summary of updates that have occurred during the past few months:

Robinson Reserve Master Plan (Tuart Hill) Robinson Reserve provides valuable sporting and recreational opportunities for the community which will be enhanced with a number of planned upgrades. These upgrades include a barbecue and picnic area, shelters and seating, a new and upgraded playground, public toilets and an improved path network. Additional recreational items have also been planned with a new basketball/netball half-court and skate and scooter elements. These upgrades are anticipated to commence in 2019. Left: Robinson Reserve Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre The iconic amphitheatre is now looking better than ever after some recent upgrades. Three shade sails have been replaced, the entire structure has been repainted and more than a dozen up-lights have been replaced.

Dianella Regional Open Space Sports floodlighting has been replaced on Oval 3 at the popular reserve. The newly-introduced flood lighting uses energy efficient LED technology and provides required lighting levels for local sports. Princess Wallington Reserve (Balga) Lotterywest presented the City with a $2.34 million grant that will go towards the Princess Wallington Community Parkland project in Balga. The balance of the $7.3 million project will be funded by the City. Ecoscape has been awarded the design contract for the project and this work is now underway. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2019. On completion, local kids will be able to enjoy a new skate facility, multi-court area (basketball/soccer and netball), BMX track, regional playground and more. These new recreational activities will be supported by open spaces with park amenities such as barbeque and picnic areas, public toilets, shelters and seating.

Mount Lawley Streetscape Study A study is underway to review the Mount Lawley centre streetscape, along the section of Beaufort Street between Walcott Street and Queen Street, and including Beaucott and Astor lanes. The project will ultimately improve the streetscape with new aspects such as public art, street furniture and tree plantings. It is anticipated that the improvements will be rolled out during the next 12 months.

North Beach Jetty The longstanding North Beach Jetty has had an overhaul this year to return it to its best. The jetty has received extensive upgrades including replacement of timber decking and supports along with a new jetty light.

Odin Drive-In Theatre For more than 20 years, the Odin Drive- In Theatre in Innaloo proved popular with movie fans. It was located on Odin Road – between Orr Place and Amelia Street – and offered 500 bays when it opened on 31 December in 1964. The drive-in also featured a playground and a café. Massive arc lamps projected the latest movies from the operations box onto a towering screen that measured 63ft (19.2m) tall and 90ft (27.4m) wide. To meet demand, the number of car bays increased to 677 in 1965. In 1979, the City Theatre/TVW group purchased the drive-in theatre and operated it for

nine years. Hoyts later took over City Theatre in 1988 and decided to close all six of its drive-in theatres around Perth. The Odin Drive-in Theatre hosted its last screening in July 1988 and the site was demolished later that month to make way for the residential housing you see today. Inspiring Migrant Stories The Migrant Employment Stories project

Nations to working in an aged care kitchen in Perth. While a challenge initially, she later realised the new role was a good opportunity to gain a better understanding of local workplace culture. She hopes her story will help others value new employment opportunities. The project complements the City’s Kaleidoscope Initiative, which supports newcomers in securing related employment and helps employers reap the rewards of a diverse workforce. More Living Green Incentives On the Way

The City of Stirling recognises that small changes can make a big difference to our environment over time. The City’s Living Green program continues to encourage residents and schools to take action and start the journey towards more sustainable lifestyles. Each year, the program offers a range of incentives, rebates and workshops to help green the City and reduce water and energy use. During the next 12 months, the City will offer free native plants, home sustainability audits, gardening workshops and more. 2018 Rates Prize Draw Winners More than 20 lucky winners each picked up a fantastic prize at the City’s recent Rates Prize Draw. The impressive collection of prizes included a Lambretta scooter, free movies for a year, $1,000 bank accounts and a $1,000 shopping spree. Nancy Milne won the top prize of a 2018 Toyota Camry Ascent Sport Hybrid from Scarboro Toyota Osborne Park valued at $36,000. By paying rates early, the City is able to invest and generate additional funds for the City, which can then be invested back

into the community. Earlier payment of rates also helps the City keep its rate increases to a minimum. The real winner of the rates incentive prize promotion was the community. The promotion will run again in 2019, giving those ratepayers who pay their rates in full early an opportunity to go into the draw. A special thank-you goes to all our sponsors who helped contribute to a prize pool valued at over $65,000. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Community Noticeboard

Firebreak Safety Property owners are required to install and maintain firebreaks from 30 November 2018 through to 31 March 2019. Owners of land less than 2,000sqm must slash/ mow all grass to a height no greater than 5 centimetres and remove all slashed greenery and other flammable material from the land. All other property owners must ensure that a 3-metre cleared perimeter free of all combustible material is in place. Switched on to Energy Savings The energy savings keep coming with recent upgrades to Stirling Community Centres – Scarborough and Stirling Leisure Centres – Hamersley. New energy efficient lighting at the Scarborough venue will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 32 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year and save the City about $20,000 in annual running costs. A new rooftop solar system added to the Hamersley venue now supplies a third of the energy needed to power the entire centre. The new 85-panel solar system atop the sports hall will save the City about $11,000 in energy costs each year and pay for itself in just two and a half years. The system will also cut annual greenhouse gas emissions by 30 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Free CompostingWorkshop The City is offering residents a free workshop on worm farming, composting and bokashi in North Beach on 2 March 2019. Learn practical and easy ways to compost, create a worm farm and use a bokashi bucket for all spaces from window sills to big backyards. Discover how to use meat, fish bones and out of date cheeses in a composting system.You can also set up your very own worm farm and take away enough fat worms to get started. Cat and Dog Registrations All dogs older than three months and cats over the age of six months must be registered with the City. With the 2018 renewal date now history, avoid a fine by registering your pet now!
