Still on the topic of business, in our ongoing efforts to make trading easier for small business, it is great to report we have introduced a new Footpath Trading and Activation Permit that enables same day approval for applications. It’s a real win for business, Mayor’s message

as previously all developments on the City’s footpaths/verges required development approval from the City, and were subject to multiple policies and local laws. Another way the City is supporting local business is getting behind the Small Business Friendly Approvals Project. A joint initiative with the Small Business Development Corporation, the project is about refining our approval processes to make it as straightforward as possible for small businesses to start, grow and prosper in Stirling.

Welcome to the Bunuru edition of Scene, which covers the months of February and March and signifies the time of coastal living and fishing on the Nyoongar calendar. It is a superb time of year to get amongst the entertaining selection of summer events on offer. One of

Ask the City!

The Customer Contact Centre receives thousands of phone calls from Stirling residents each week. Staff from the City’s Customer Service team provide answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. Q. I’m going away on holiday, but have no one to look after my property while I’m away. Can the City assist? The City’s Security Team offers a Holiday Watch service that provides patrols of your property while you’re away. Officers will drive past your property to check that it looks secure from the outside. Visit the Holiday Watch page on the City’s website, then complete the form at least two weeks before your departure. Q. How much notice do I need to give to book a skip bin? As a guide, skip bins should be booked one to two weeks in advance, as delivery will depend on availability in your area. Bookings for weekends prove popular, so it’s recommended to make a booking several weeks ahead. To book a skip bin, visit www.stirling. wa.gov.au and search ‘skip bin’ or phone the City on (08) 9205 8555. Q. Can I prune the street tree on my verge? No, the City is solely responsible for all pruning of street trees to ensure their long-term survival. If you believe a street tree needs urgent pruning, please contact the City on (08) 9205 8555.

A classic look at Wanneroo Road near Dog Swamp

Yokine Derived from the Aboriginal word for native dog, Yokine got its name because of its closeness to Dog Swamp. First named Mount Yokine in 1922, the area was originally used as a survey point and sits close to 80 metres above sea level. The suburb was also known as Yokine Hill at one time. Prior to World War II, there was just the one house in the area at the eastern end of Royal Street. A housing boom after the war resulted in most of the land around the local golf course being developed by the early 1950s. The suburb was later recognised as a postal district name in 1954. The southern section of Yokine experienced rapid housing growth in the 1960s and the suburb was almost completely developed by the late 1970s.Yokine is home to the Western Australian Golf Club, Dog Swamp Shopping Centre and Yokine Regional Open Space. To discover more about the City’s history, visit the museum on Elvire Street on Wednesdays from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, other times by appointment.
